When your UAE residence visa is cancelled, you do not have to leave immediately — there is a grace period of 30, 60, or 180 days depending on your visa type. This guide explains who gets which window, how to use the time, and the exit or transfer strategies that work.

What is the grace period?

The grace period is the legal window between cancellation of your UAE residence visa and the moment you must either exit the country or secure a new residence status. It exists to let residents wrap up affairs — close bank accounts, settle Etisalat / DU, return rentals, transfer schools, find a new job. Overstay fines apply only after the grace period ends.

Step-by-step — how to use the grace period

  1. Day 1 - 7: get a copy of the cancellation paper from your sponsor / employer. Verify the cancellation date showing on the ICP smart services / GDRFA app.
  2. Day 7 - 14: apply for any new residence (new employment, freelance permit, Green / Golden Visa) if staying — start the application process to compress timelines.
  3. Day 14 - 30: settle UAE financial affairs — clear loan / credit card balances, cancel utilities, return tenancy / Ejari, settle Salik.
  4. Day 30 - 50: if exiting, book flights and confirm dependents' grace periods (each may differ).
  5. Day 50 - 60: exit before the grace period ends, OR have new visa stamping completed.
  6. If overstaying — pay accumulated fines at the airport (immigration counter) on exit, or via ICP.

Documents required during the grace period

  • Original cancellation paper (paper or digital)
  • Cancelled Emirates ID (still valid for ID purposes during grace)
  • Passport
  • Bank closure / no-debt letters (recommended for re-entry)
  • Tenancy clearance (Ejari termination or paid-up notice)
  • Etisalat / DU clearance
  • For new-visa transition — offer letter / freelance permit / property documents

Processing time considerations

If you plan to transition to a new visa during the grace period, plan for the full new-visa cycle inside the window:

  • New employment visa: 15 - 30 days (within most grace periods if started early).
  • Green Visa or Golden Visa application: 10 - 25 days.
  • Status change instead of exit: 5 - 10 days.

Common mistakes

  • Assuming the grace period auto-extends: it does not. After day 60 (or 30 / 180 depending on type), AED 50/day starts accruing.
  • Not collecting the cancellation paper: some employers fail to cancel within 14 days, leaving the employee in legal limbo. Always confirm cancellation date.
  • Forgetting dependents: family visas tie to the principal — when the principal's visa is cancelled, dependents have their own (typically 30-day) grace. Address dependents' status separately.
  • Leaving without settling debt: outstanding bank loans / credit cards / utilities can trigger travel bans at the airport.
  • Missing the Emirates ID return: cancelled Emirates IDs technically should be returned, though enforcement is light.
  • Ignoring the 6-month rule: for those staying on a Golden / Green Visa during a transition, the 6-month-out rule may apply if you were already absent.

Exit strategies

Strategy 1: clean exit

If you have decided to leave the UAE, use the grace period to wrap up — close bank accounts, return tenancy, ship belongings. Book a flight before grace ends and pay no fines.

Strategy 2: in-country transition

If you have a new job offer or business plan, start the new visa application immediately. Status change inside the UAE takes only 5 - 10 days, and you can transition without exiting.

Strategy 3: tourist-visa bridge

If you need more time and are not yet ready for a new residence, you can exit on day 60 / 180, then re-enter on a tourist visa (typically 30 - 90 days). This buys time but resets the residence clock.

Strategy 4: extension request

In limited cases (medical emergency, ongoing legal proceedings, compassionate grounds) GDRFA / ICP grant grace-period extensions. Request via the smart-services portal with supporting documents.

Frequently asked questions

What is the maximum overstay fine?

For residence visa overstays, the cap is AED 5,000 (reached after roughly 100 days post-grace). For tourist visa overstays the cap is similar — both are settled at the airport on exit.

Can I work during the grace period?

Working during the grace period is illegal because the labour card has been cancelled. You can have a signed offer letter and finalise paperwork, but cannot start formal work until the new labour card is issued.

Can my children stay in school during grace?

Yes — schools accept students through the principal's grace period. After grace ends, schools require valid residence visas for continued enrolment.

Does the grace period apply to dependents automatically?

Dependents (spouse, children) are usually given the same grace period as the principal. Check each dependent's residence status individually on the ICP / GDRFA app — discrepancies happen.

Can I bank during the grace period?

Banks generally let you operate accounts during grace, but new credit / loan applications are typically denied. Closing the account is best done early in the grace window because clearance letters take 5 - 7 days.

What if my employer didn't cancel my visa?

If 14 days have passed since your last working day and the employer has not cancelled, file a complaint with MOHRE (600 59 0000 or mohre.gov.ae). MOHRE can compel cancellation and prevent absconding cases.

Does Golden Visa really get 180 days?

Yes. Golden and Green Visa holders enjoy 180 days post-cancellation, recognising that they are typically self-sponsored and have substantial UAE ties.

Can I extend a 30-day grace to 60 days?

Older 30-day employment visas issued before 2023 cannot retroactively be extended to 60. However, if you re-apply under a new visa type (Green Visa, freelance permit) you immediately enter that visa's grace regime.
