Every UAE residence visa — new or renewal — requires a medical fitness certificate. In Dubai, the test is run by the Dubai Health Authority (DHA) and screens for communicable diseases that can affect the wider population. Here's the practical 2026 guide: which centre to pick, when to go, what they actually test, and why a small minority fail.

What DHA tests for

The DHA medical fitness panel checks for diseases that are public-health risks under UAE residency rules:

  • HIV (anti-HIV antibodies)
  • Hepatitis B (HBsAg)
  • Hepatitis C (HCV) — only for specific occupations
  • Tuberculosis (TB) — chest X-ray; sputum culture if X-ray suspicious
  • Syphilis (VDRL/RPR) — only for specific occupations
  • Pregnancy — for female applicants in certain occupations (declaration, not disqualifying)
  • Leprosy — physical exam only

Documents to bring

  • Original passport + visa entry stamp / status change receipt
  • Two passport photos (white background) — some centres now use digital capture
  • Existing Emirates ID (renewal cases)
  • Medical typing form from a typing centre or your PRO (DHA accepts e-form via the Sehhaty app)

Step-by-step at a DHA centre

  1. Pre-book a slot on the DHA app or via the typing centre — walk-ins accepted but expect 30–60 minute waits.
  2. Reception verifies your file and prints a token.
  3. Photo and biometrics capture.
  4. Blood draw (single tube — HIV, Hep B, syphilis where applicable).
  5. Chest X-ray in an adjacent room.
  6. Quick clinician review (30 seconds — visual leprosy / scarring check).
  7. Pay (if not paid online), collect appointment slip with result-time.
  8. Result auto-syncs to ICP / GDRFA — the residence visa moves to "Medical Cleared" status.

Why people fail

The fail rate is below 2% for most nationalities, but the reasons cluster predictably:

  • Active TB on chest X-ray — referred to DHA's TB clinic for further testing; visa typically deferred until treatment.
  • HIV-positive — Federal Cabinet Resolution 7 of 2022 still mandates deportation, but UAE nationals' spouses and dependents have limited exemptions in practice.
  • Hepatitis B (active) — disqualifies food handlers, salon workers, healthcare staff, teachers, and nursery workers; office-based jobs are generally cleared with a "fit with conditions" certificate.
  • Pregnancy — not a fail, but flagged for occupations that involve chemical exposure (salon staff most commonly).
  • Old TB scar without active disease — usually cleared after sputum testing; adds 1–2 weeks to processing.

Tips to avoid retests and delays

  • Hydrate well — saves 10 minutes at the blood draw.
  • Wear a t-shirt without metal buttons or zips so you can keep it on for the X-ray.
  • If you've had a recent X-ray (last 6 months) for unrelated reasons, bring the report — it usually doesn't substitute, but DHA may accept it for renewal cases.
  • Avoid Mondays after a long weekend — the busiest day at every centre.
  • If you're applying for a Golden Visa or family visa, all dependents must complete the same panel — book together to share a single trip.

Frequently asked

Is the test painful? A standard blood draw and a 5-second X-ray. Most people are in and out in 25 minutes.

Can I eat before the test? Yes. There is no fasting requirement.

Do I need to retest if my visa is renewed every 2 years? Yes — every renewal requires a fresh test.

What if I'm pregnant? The X-ray is replaced with an alternative protocol (declaration + clinical exam). Tell reception before the X-ray.

Can my employer cover the cost? Yes — most labour contracts in Dubai mandate the employer pays for medical fitness related to employment visas.
