Sharjah Visa & Government Services 2026: SED, Typing Centres & Processing

Complete 2026 guide to Sharjah visa and government services — Sharjah Economic Department, how it differs from Dubai, accredited typing centres, and processing routes.

Sharjah is the UAE's third-largest emirate and runs its own visa, licensing, and government-services ecosystem under the Sharjah Economic Development Department (SEDD). The processes look superficially similar to Dubai, but the channels, fees, and accepted documents differ in ways that catch newcomers out — here's the 2026 playbook.

Who runs what in Sharjah

Three authorities cover almost every transaction you'll encounter:

  • Sharjah Economic Development Department (SEDD): trade licensing, commercial registrations, establishment cards, and economic-activity approvals.
  • Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs & Port Security (ICP): all residence visas, entry permits, and Emirates ID for Sharjah residents — Sharjah does not have its own GDRFA equivalent like Dubai.
  • Sharjah Municipality: Ejari-equivalent tenancy registration, building permits, and local fees.

How Sharjah differs from Dubai

The single biggest practical difference: in Dubai, residence visas are processed through GDRFA Amer; in Sharjah, every residence transaction goes through ICP smart services or an ICP-accredited typing centre. There is no Amer equivalent.

Accredited typing centres

Sharjah relies heavily on Tasheel/Tas'heel-style typing centres for both labour and immigration paperwork. They accept walk-ins, type Arabic forms on your behalf, scan documents, and submit to ICP or MOHRE on the same day. Look for the green "ICP Accredited" sticker — unaccredited centres will charge less but cannot file directly.

Step-by-step: residence visa in Sharjah

  1. Employer or sponsor opens an establishment file with MOHRE and SEDD.
  2. Submit entry-permit application via ICP smart services or an accredited typing centre.
  3. If the applicant is outside UAE, they enter on the e-visa; if inside, change of status is filed through ICP.
  4. Medical fitness test at any DHA/MOHAP-approved centre in Sharjah (Kuwaiti Hospital, Zulekha, Burjeel).
  5. Emirates ID biometrics — booked through ICP smart services.
  6. Residence visa stamped digitally; no sticker required since 2022.

Why people pick Sharjah over Dubai

  • Lower licensing costs: SEDD trade licences typically run 30–40% cheaper than Dubai DED.
  • Family-friendly environment: stricter cultural rules but lower rents — useful for families with school-age children.
  • Free zones: SAIF Zone, Hamriyah, Sharjah Media City (Shams), and Sharjah Publishing City all offer competitive packages.
  • Dual-emirate workers: a Sharjah residence visa is valid across all seven emirates, so commuting to Dubai jobs is normal.

Pitfalls to avoid

  • Wrong authority: applying via Amer/GDRFA from a Sharjah company will be rejected — the file must sit with ICP.
  • Tenancy mismatch: family visas in Sharjah require a Sharjah tenancy contract registered with the municipality, not a Dubai Ejari.
  • Outdated trade licence: SEDD freezes immigration files if the licence has lapsed — renew it first.
  • Insurance shortfall: Sharjah enforces a basic-plan insurance minimum that some imported policies don't satisfy.

Frequently asked

Can I sponsor my family on a Sharjah visa? Yes, the federal salary thresholds (AED 4,000 + accommodation, or 4,700 without) apply identically.

Do I need to visit Sharjah for biometrics? Yes — your Emirates ID biometrics must be captured at an ICP centre in Sharjah unless you hold a Dubai-issued residence file.

Is Sharjah a "dry" emirate for visa purposes? Alcohol licensing is restricted, but it has no bearing on visa eligibility.

Can a Dubai company sponsor a Sharjah resident? Yes — your residence visa follows your employer's emirate, regardless of where you live.

How long does a Sharjah residence visa take? Typically 7–10 working days end-to-end; express channels can compress this to 3–5 days.
