How the UAE student residence visa works in 2026 — university sponsorship, application timeline, costs, and switching to a work visa after graduation.

The UAE has become a serious study destination, hosting branch campuses of NYU, Sorbonne, Heriot-Watt, Wollongong, Murdoch, Birmingham, and dozens more, alongside national universities like UAEU and Khalifa University. A student residence visa is the legal foundation that makes living, working part-time, and eventually transitioning to a career in the UAE possible.

What the student visa is

The student residence visa is a 1-year (sometimes 2-year) renewable residence permit issued under the sponsorship of an accredited UAE university or college. It allows the student to live in the UAE for the duration of the academic programme, leave and re-enter freely, open a UAE bank account, get a driving licence, and rent accommodation. Doctoral and outstanding-student tracks can also unlock a 5-year visa or a Golden Visa nomination.

For most undergraduate and postgraduate students, the visa is sponsored directly by the university's PRO department. The student does not need a parent or employer sponsor.

Who qualifies

  • Holders of an unconditional offer letter from a UAE-licensed higher education institution.
  • Students aged 18 and above (younger students typically remain on a parent's family visa).
  • Students enrolled in a full-time programme; part-time and online-only courses do not qualify.
  • Students whose passport remains valid for at least six months from the visa start date.

Cost breakdown

ItemFee (AED)
Entry permit (sponsored)500 – 1,200
Medical fitness test320 – 600
Emirates ID (1-year)170
Visa stamping (1-year)500 – 700
Health insurance (student plan, annual)1,200 – 3,500
University admin fee200 – 1,000

Universities typically bundle the visa fee into the first-semester registration package. Plan for a total of AED 3,500 to AED 6,500 for the visa cycle.

Step-by-step process

  1. Receive an unconditional offer letter from your chosen UAE university.
  2. Submit your passport copy, photo, attested high-school or undergraduate certificates, and any required English-language scores (IELTS / TOEFL / Duolingo).
  3. Pay the university's first-semester fees and the visa-processing charge.
  4. The university PRO submits the entry-permit application via ICP or GDRFA Amer.
  5. Receive your entry permit by email within 5 to 15 working days.
  6. Travel to the UAE on the entry permit. If you are already inside the UAE on a tourist or family visa, request a status change.
  7. Complete the medical fitness test, biometrics, and Emirates ID application.
  8. The student visa is stamped electronically and the digital residence file is activated.

Application timeline

Plan for approximately 4 to 6 weeks from accepting your offer letter to holding a stamped student visa. International students should aim to complete the entry-permit step before the semester begins so that medical and Emirates ID can be done in the first two weeks of arrival.

Documents required

  • Passport with at least 6 months of validity.
  • Two passport-size photos, white background.
  • Unconditional offer letter from the university.
  • Attested high-school certificate or undergraduate degree.
  • English-language test scores if required by the programme.
  • Proof of payment of first-semester tuition.
  • Tenancy contract or hostel allocation letter (some emirates request it at stamping).
  • UAE-compliant health insurance policy.

Working part time during studies

Since 2018 the UAE has allowed students aged 18 and above to take up part-time work with a permit issued by MOHRE. The university must issue a no-objection letter, and the part-time work permit is renewed annually. This pathway is popular for retail, hospitality, and on-campus tutor roles. Total hours typically cannot exceed 20 per week during semester and full time during summer.

Switching to a work visa after graduation

Recent graduates have three main routes to stay in the UAE after the student visa expires.

  1. Direct employment visa. Once you accept a job offer, your employer initiates the cancellation of the student visa and applies for a fresh employment visa through MOHRE and ICP / GDRFA. This is the most common path.
  2. Job-search visa. The UAE offers a job-search visa of 60, 90, or 120 days for outstanding graduates from the world's top universities or those with a recent UAE degree at certain GPA thresholds. This buys you time to look without staying on a tourist visa.
  3. Golden Visa for outstanding students. University graduates with a GPA of 3.8 or above from one of the QS top-100 universities can be nominated for a 10-year Golden Visa as outstanding students. UAE-based universities have their own quotas and can recommend students directly.

Importantly, the student visa is tied to the academic programme. Once you graduate, the university typically cancels the visa within 30 to 60 days, after which you must either be on an employment visa, a job-search visa, or have left the country. Plan the transition early.

Common mistakes

  • Assuming the offer letter is enough to enter the UAE — you still need the entry permit stamped before travel.
  • Letting the visa lapse over the summer break without confirming the renewal cycle with the university PRO.
  • Working part time without the MOHRE permit, which can trigger fines for both the student and the employer.
  • Waiting until the last week of the student visa's grace period to cancel and apply for a work visa, leaving no buffer for medical results or Emirates ID delays.

Frequently asked questions

Can my parents sponsor me instead of the university?

Yes, if your parent is a UAE resident with a salary that meets the family sponsorship threshold. Many students stay on a family visa until 25 if enrolled full time. The university route is preferred for students whose parents do not live in the UAE.

Does the student visa allow multiple entries?

Yes. Once stamped it functions like any other UAE residence visa, allowing unlimited entries and exits within the validity period and within the standard six-month absence rule.

Can I switch universities on the same visa?

No. The visa is tied to a specific institution. A change of university requires the old visa to be cancelled and a new one issued by the receiving institution.

Will I lose my visa during semester breaks abroad?

Only if you remain outside the UAE for more than six consecutive months. Standard summer breaks are well within the limit.

Do I need to pay tax on a part-time job?

The UAE has no personal income tax. Corporate tax does not apply to part-time employee salaries either.

Can I apply for a Golden Visa as a current student?

Outstanding students at UAE schools and universities can be nominated for a 5- or 10-year Golden Visa while still studying. Speak to your university's student affairs office or check the ICP and Ministry of Education portals.

What happens to my visa if I drop out?

The university must cancel your visa, after which you have 30 to 60 days to leave the UAE or transition to another visa category.
