The UAE charges AED 50 per day for overstaying a visit, tourist, or residence visa beyond the legal grace period. Fines accumulate quickly, but the system also offers amnesty windows and structured ways to clear penalties. This guide explains the 2026 rules and the cleanest exit routes.

What counts as an overstay

An overstay begins after both the visa expiry and the legal grace period have passed. The grace period exists to give travellers time to extend, change status, or depart without penalty.

Visa typeGrace period after expiry
Tourist visa (30 / 60 / 90 days)10 days
Visit visa (relative / family)10 days
Residence visa30 days
Cancellation date (residence)30 days from cancellation
Entry permit (not yet stamped)None — must be activated within 60 days of issue

Standard overstay fine

The flat rate is AED 50 per day from the day after the grace period ends. There is no longer a separate first-day surcharge — the fine accrues evenly until paid.

How to check your overstay balance

  1. Open the UAEICP app or visit icp.gov.ae.
  2. Choose "Pay Fines" or "Inquiries".
  3. Enter passport or Emirates ID number.
  4. Review the fine breakdown by visa file.
  5. Pay by card. A receipt is generated immediately.

For Dubai-issued residence visas, the same query is available through the GDRFA app.

Clearing fines without leaving

If you intend to stay (extension, residence application, status change), you can settle the fine and continue legally:

  • Pay the accrued fine through ICP or GDRFA.
  • Apply for a tourist visa extension if still within an extendable cycle.
  • Begin a status-change application for residence, freelance, or family visa.
  • Pay the AED 640 status-change fee plus the new visa fees.

For employment-based status changes, see our guide on residence visa transitions.

Clearing fines on exit

If you plan to leave, you can settle fines at the airport before boarding. Counters are present at all major UAE airports, but queues during peak hours can stretch to 2 hours — pay in advance through the app whenever possible. You will not be allowed to board without clearing the balance.

Amnesty windows

The UAE periodically announces amnesty programmes that allow overstayers to either:

  • Exit without paying accumulated fines.
  • Adjust status to a new visa without penalty.

The most recent broad amnesty ran in 2024 and covered roughly four months. While no amnesty is currently active in early 2026, the government runs targeted programmes for vulnerable groups (workers in distress, humanitarian cases). Check the UAE government portal or major news outlets before assuming an amnesty applies.

Consequences of long-term overstay

Overstay durationLikely outcome
1 – 30 daysFine paid; future visa applications usually unaffected
30 – 90 daysFine paid; possible re-entry delay of weeks
90 – 180 daysRisk of immigration ban (1–6 months)
180 + daysLikely ban + deportation; future residence harder

Special cases

  • Children under 18: overstay fines apply at the same rate; sponsors are responsible.
  • Newborns: children born in the UAE must be added to a residence visa within 120 days, after which fines start.
  • Cancelled residence visas: the 30-day clock starts on the cancellation date, not the original expiry.
  • Stranded travellers: medical and humanitarian cases can apply for fine waivers via ICP customer service.

Frequently asked questions

Will I be banned from re-entering if I overstay?

Short overstays cleared at the airport rarely lead to a ban. Long overstays (over 90 days) increase the risk significantly.

Can the fine be reduced or waived?

Outside of amnesty periods, fines are generally not negotiable. ICP may waive fines in documented humanitarian or medical cases.

Does paying the fine remove the overstay record?

The fine is closed once paid, but the overstay history remains on the immigration file. It is visible during future visa applications.

Can I extend my tourist visa after the grace period ends?

Sometimes — extensions filed within a few days of grace expiry may still be approved. After that, exit is usually the only option.

Are children fined separately?

Yes, every individual on a separate visa file accrues their own AED 50/day fine.

What is the maximum fine I could face?

Fines are uncapped — they continue to accumulate until paid. There is no longer the older AED 25,000 cap that some sources still mention.

Can I pay an overstay fine on someone else's behalf?

Yes. The ICP system accepts payments by passport or EID number; the payer's identity is not restricted.
