The UAE residence-visa medical fitness test is the same federal panel for everyone — but several occupations require additional health screening and certifications before the practitioner can legally work. If you're a food handler, a hairdresser, a nurse or a school-bus driver, expect extra tests, certificates, and renewals on top of the visa medical.
Why occupations get extra screening
Three regulators set occupational health standards in the UAE: the Ministry of Health and Prevention (MOHAP), the relevant emirate health authority (DHA, DOH, MOH), and the municipality (Dubai Municipality, Abu Dhabi City Municipality, Sharjah Municipality). The logic is straightforward — workers in close contact with food, hair, skin, blood or vehicles can transmit disease or harm at scale, so the public-health screen is more conservative.
Food handlers — the Person In Charge (PIC) regime
Anyone who prepares, packages, transports or serves food for sale in the UAE needs an Occupational Health Card (OHC) from the local municipality. In Dubai this is the Person In Charge (PIC) system; Abu Dhabi runs the ADAFSA Food Handler Card; Sharjah operates the Sharjah Food Handler Card.
| Test | Reason |
|---|---|
| HIV, Hep B, Hep C, syphilis | Standard residence panel |
| Stool culture (Salmonella, Shigella, E. coli) | Foodborne pathogens |
| Stool ova & parasite exam | Helminths and protozoa |
| Throat swab (Strep) | Respiratory transmission |
| Tuberculosis (chest X-ray + sputum if needed) | Aerosol transmission |
| Skin infection check | Direct contact |
| PIC / Food Handler training certificate | HACCP basics |
Typical cost: AED 350 – 600 (medical) + AED 250 – 450 (PIC card and course). Renewal annually for the card; medical aligned with residence-visa cycle.
Salon staff — gents' barbers, ladies' beauty therapists, henna artists
Dubai Municipality and Sharjah Municipality require salon staff to hold an Occupational Health Card backed by an extended medical screen. The risk profile is bloodborne pathogens (clippers, razors, waxing) and skin/scalp infections.
- Standard residence panel (HIV, Hep B/C, syphilis, TB).
- Skin / scalp clinical exam.
- Hand and nail bed inspection (fungal infections).
- Sometimes VDRL test (syphilis) is repeated annually.
- Hep B vaccination status — recommended, not always mandatory.
- Hygiene training certificate from the municipality.
Typical cost: AED 300 – 550 (medical) + AED 150 – 300 (OHC issuance).
Healthcare workers — DHA, DOH, MOH licensing
Doctors, nurses, dentists, pharmacists, paramedics, lab technicians and physiotherapists need professional licensure on top of their residence visa. Licensure (Sheryan in Dubai, Tamm in Abu Dhabi, MOH licensing in northern emirates) bundles a primary-source verification of credentials with a medical fitness check that goes beyond the standard panel.
| Test | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Standard residence panel | Visa |
| Hep B vaccination titre (anti-HBs ≥ 10 mIU/mL) | Patient safety |
| Hep B booster if titre low | Patient safety |
| Measles, Mumps, Rubella (MMR) immunity | Patient safety |
| Varicella immunity | Patient safety |
| Tetanus booster | Needle stick |
| Annual TB screen | Patient safety |
| Influenza vaccine (annual) | Patient safety |
Typical cost: Bundled into employer onboarding — AED 800 – 2,000 for the additional tests and immunisations on top of the standard medical.
Drivers — light, heavy, school bus, taxi, delivery
RTA Dubai, Integrated Transport Centre Abu Dhabi (ITC), and Sharjah's SRTA all require an additional fitness-to-drive medical for commercial driving licences.
| Driver type | Extra tests |
|---|---|
| Light commercial (taxi, delivery) | Vision, colour vision, hearing, BP, urine glucose |
| Heavy / bus driver | Above + ECG, comprehensive cardiology, drug screen |
| School bus / school transport | Above + criminal record check, annual psychological evaluation |
| Hazardous goods driver | Above + pulmonary function, hepatobiliary panel |
Typical cost: AED 250 – 500 for the standard commercial-driver medical; AED 600 – 1,200 for school bus / hazardous goods.
Other regulated occupations
- Nursery / teaching staff: Hep B status, TB screen, MMR immunity, annual police clearance.
- Construction supervisors / scaffolders: ECG, pulmonary function, vertigo / vestibular check, hearing.
- Diving instructors: Annual diving medical (HSE-aligned), audiogram, pulmonary, ENT.
- Aviation crew: GCAA Class 1 / 2 medical — far more rigorous than the residence panel.
- Domestic workers: Standard panel; pregnancy declaration; some employers require additional Hep / TB testing.
Where to do occupation-specific tests
Most DHA, SEHA, and SHJ Health centres run a separate "occupational health" lane on top of their visa medical. In Dubai, the Al Muhaisnah and Al Karama centres are the best equipped; in Abu Dhabi, Mussafah Industrial DPSC; in Sharjah, the Industrial Area Health Centre. Smart Salem also offers occupational packages for white-collar applicants.
Who pays
The employer typically bears all visa-related and occupation-related medical costs under UAE labour law. For self-sponsored freelancers, investors, and Golden Visa holders, the applicant pays — but the costs are tax-deductible if linked to a registered freelance permit or LLC.
Frequently asked
How often does the OHC renew? Annually for food handlers and salon staff. Driver medicals renew with the driving licence (every 5 years for light, 3 years for heavy).
Will an STD diagnosis end my career? It depends on the role. Food handler, salon, healthcare and nursery roles are restricted; office-based roles are generally cleared.
Can I work while waiting for the OHC? No — the OHC is a precondition for the activity. Employers face fines for unlicensed staff.
Are vaccinations mandatory? For healthcare workers, yes (Hep B in particular). For others, recommended.
