Bangladeshis form one of the largest expatriate communities in the UAE — roughly 1 million strong — concentrated in construction, hospitality, transport, retail, and increasingly white-collar sectors. The UAE work-visa pipeline for Bangladeshi nationals runs through a unique two-country approval system: the UAE issues the entry permit, and Bangladesh's BMET (Bureau of Manpower, Employment and Training) approves the worker for departure. This guide explains both ends of the process.
BMET clearance — the unique Bangladesh requirement
Every Bangladeshi worker travelling to the UAE for employment must obtain a BMET smart card before departure from Dhaka or Chittagong. The BMET card confirms:
- Pre-departure orientation training (PDOT) completed.
- Employment contract registered with BMET.
- Recruitment fee compliance (no overcharging by Bangladeshi recruitment agencies).
- Insurance coverage for the worker.
Without the BMET smart card, immigration officers at Dhaka airport will deny boarding. The card is issued at the BMET office on production of the UAE entry permit, attested employment contract, medical certificate, and police clearance.
Visa categories and indicative fees
| Visa type | Bangladesh-side cost | UAE-side cost |
|---|---|---|
| Standard work visa (unskilled/semi-skilled) | BDT 1.6 lakh max (BMET cap) | Borne by employer |
| Skilled / professional | BDT 2 lakh+ varies | Borne by employer |
| Tourist visa (30 days) | BDT 6,000 – 10,000 service fee | AED 350 – 500 |
| Family visit visa | n/a | AED 350 – 600 |
| Free zone employment | BDT 1.5 lakh max | Borne by free zone employer |
The BMET cap on recruitment fees is a key worker protection — any Bangladeshi recruitment agency charging more is illegal. UAE employers themselves bear the visa, residence, medical, and Emirates ID costs.

- Driving — taxi (RTA / Careem fleet), heavy vehicle, light delivery (Talabat, Noon).
- Security — SIRA-licensed security guards (mandatory training in UAE).
- Retail and warehousing — supermarket staff, warehouse pickers, logistics.

- Office and tech — accountants, IT support, engineers — increasingly common as the second-generation diaspora moves white-collar.
Bangladesh Embassy in Abu Dhabi and Consulate General Dubai
- Bangladesh Embassy Abu Dhabi — issues machine-readable passports (MRP) and e-passports, attests Bangladeshi documents, and provides labour-welfare wing services for worker disputes.
- Consulate General Dubai — handles passport renewals, attestations, NID corrections, and emergency travel permits for the Northern Emirates and Dubai.
- Labour Wing — both posts have welfare officers who mediate salary, contract, and absconding disputes between Bangladeshi workers and UAE employers.
- Appointment system: through Probashi Kallyan Bhaban portal or in-person token.
Document attestation chain for Bangladesh
- Notarisation in Bangladesh.
- Attestation by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) in Dhaka — Karwan Bazar.
- Attestation by the UAE Embassy in Dhaka.
- Final attestation by MOFAIC inside the UAE.
Educational certificates also need a prior Education Ministry (HSC/SSC) or UGC (university) attestation before MOFA. The full chain takes 4–6 weeks.
Step-by-step from Dhaka to UAE residence
- UAE employer secures MOHRE work permit and entry permit.

- Police clearance certificate (PCC) obtained from Bangladesh Police HQ.
- Medical at a BMET-approved Gulf Approved Medical Centres Association (GAMCA) clinic.
- Employment contract attested at MOFA Dhaka and UAE Embassy.
- BMET smart card issued.
- Travel to UAE on the entry permit.
- Inside UAE: medical fitness test, biometrics, residence stamping, Emirates ID.
- Labour card and WPS salary registration completed by employer.
Worker rights and protection
The UAE-Bangladesh Memorandum of Understanding obligates both sides to enforce minimum wage standards (currently AED 1,000+ for unskilled workers in many sectors), maximum 8-hour days, midday outdoor work bans (June–September 12:30–15:00), end-of-service gratuity, return air ticket, and accommodation standards. The UAE's Wage Protection System (WPS) ensures salaries are paid through banks — not cash. If salaries go unpaid, file a complaint with MOHRE through their app or call 800-60.
FAQs
Can my employer hold my passport? No — UAE law explicitly prohibits employers from confiscating passports. Report violations to MOHRE.
How long is the BMET process? Typically 2–4 weeks from receiving the UAE entry permit to BMET smart card issuance.
Can I sponsor my family from Bangladesh? Yes — you need to earn at least AED 4,000 per month plus accommodation, and dependents need attested marriage and birth certificates. See our family visa guide.
What if my employer fires me? You have a 30 to 60-day grace period to find new employment, transfer your visa, or exit the UAE. Consult MOHRE for transfer rules.
Are visit visas easy for Bangladeshis? They require strong supporting documentation (bank statement, return ticket, sponsor letter) and are best applied through a UAE-licensed PRO firm to maximise approval odds.
