The UAE is the second-largest trading partner of China in the Arab world, and a steady stream of Chinese entrepreneurs, investors, and professionals relocate to Dubai and Abu Dhabi each year. Holders of a People's Republic of China passport receive a 30-day visa-on-arrival since 2018 — but most longer-term moves go through one of three pathways: business visa, employment, or investor route. Here's how to navigate it in 2026.

Visa-on-arrival for PRC passport holders

Mainland Chinese nationals can enter the UAE for up to 30 days without applying in advance. The visa is multiple-entry within the validity period and can be extended once for a further 30 days through Amer or ICP for AED 600.

Hong Kong SAR and Macau SAR passport holders also get visa-on-arrival but with separate quotas. Taiwan passport holders need to apply for an e-visa before travel.

Business visa — the most common entry route

The 14-day, 30-day, or 60-day business visa is sponsored by a UAE company and is preferred over the standard tourist visa because it carries clearer commercial purpose, is easier to renew, and doesn't restrict the activities you can undertake (meetings, contract negotiation, factory visits, exhibitions).

TypeValidityTypical fee (AED)
14-day business visa14 days from entry320 – 450
30-day business visa30 days from entry420 – 650
60-day business visa60 days from entry720 – 1,100

Chinese Embassy in Abu Dhabi and Consulate in Dubai

  • Embassy of the People's Republic of China in the UAE — located in Abu Dhabi, handles passport renewals, travel documents, notarial certificates, and CRBA equivalents.
  • Consulate-General of China in Dubai — covers Dubai and the Northern Emirates for the same services, plus emergency consular protection.
  • Appointments are booked through the official Chinese embassy app or the China Visa Application Service Centre (CVASC) website.

Document attestation through Chinese notary

This is the step most Chinese applicants underestimate. UAE authorities require Chinese-issued documents (degrees, birth certificates, marriage certificates, no-criminal-record letters) to be authenticated through a strict three-step chain:

  1. Notarisation by a Chinese notary public in the issuing province.
  2. Authentication by the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) or the provincial Foreign Affairs Office.
  3. Attestation by the UAE Embassy in Beijing — followed by MOFAIC attestation upon arrival in the UAE.

China is not a member of the Hague Apostille Convention for purposes accepted by the UAE in this chain, so apostille alone isn't enough — full embassy legalisation is required. Expect 4–8 weeks end-to-end. Documents in Chinese also need certified Arabic or English translation in the UAE.

Step-by-step for Chinese investors

  1. Enter on visa-on-arrival or business visa.
  2. Set up free-zone or mainland company (DMCC, IFZA, JAFZA, RAKEZ are popular among Chinese SMEs).
  3. Issue investor entry permit through the relevant authority.
  4. Complete medical fitness, biometrics, residence stamping.
  5. Open corporate bank account — banks require notarised company documents and shareholder KYC; Chinese-source funds may trigger enhanced due diligence.
  6. Apply for Golden Visa upgrade once eligibility is met (capital, real estate, or talent).

Common pitfalls for Chinese applicants

  • Missing MFA authentication — provincial notarisation alone is not enough.
  • Untranslated documents — UAE accepts Chinese only after attested English or Arabic translation.
  • Bank account delays — UAE banks now apply rigorous source-of-funds checks for inbound Chinese capital. Allow 6–10 weeks.
  • Name mismatches — pinyin spelling on passports vs documents (e.g. Zhang vs Chang) often triggers rejections. Always match passport spelling exactly.

FAQs

Do Chinese nationals need a sponsor for the visa-on-arrival? No — visa-on-arrival is granted automatically at the airport on a valid PRC passport.

Can I drive on a Chinese licence? Yes during a visit, but you must convert to a UAE licence once resident — Chinese licence holders need to take the full UAE driving theory and road test.

Are WeChat Pay and Alipay accepted in the UAE? Increasingly yes — most Dubai malls, hotels, and many restaurants accept both. Bank-to-WeChat top-ups inside the UAE are restricted.

Can I sponsor my parents from China? Yes — the UAE family visa for parents requires a minimum salary (typically AED 20,000) and proof of accommodation. See our family visa guide.

Is China-UAE direct flight allowance enough for residence travel? Daily flights operate from Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Chengdu, Hong Kong — all major Chinese hubs are well-served.
